Corneal topography
Corneal topography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique used to map the surface of the cornea, the clear dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye. It measures the curvature and shape of the cornea, providing a detailed visual representation of its topography.
Corneal topography is used to:
- Diagnose and monitor corneal diseases, such as keratoconus and Fuchs’ dystrophy
- Plan and monitor refractive surgeries, like LASIK and PRK
- Fit contact lenses, especially in cases of irregularly shaped corneas
- Detect corneal injuries and traumas
- Monitor corneal transplants
The test involves:
- Sitting in front of a corneal topographer machine
- Looking into a bowl-shaped device
- A low-intensity light is projected onto the cornea
- The machine measures the reflection and creates a map of the corneal surface
Corneal topography is usually performed by an eye care professional (optometrist or ophthalmologist) and takes only a few minutes to complete.
