Holter monitoring
Holter monitoring
Holter monitoring is a non-invasive medical test that records the heart’s rhythm over a 24- to 48-hour period. It’s a portable device that’s worn like a vest or attached to a belt, with electrodes placed on the chest to capture the heart’s electrical activity.
The test is used to:
- Diagnose arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms)
- Identify palpitations or skipped beats
- Monitor the effectiveness of heart medications
- Detect silent ischemia (heart damage without symptoms)
- Evaluate chest pain or dizziness
The Holter monitor records the heart’s rhythm continuously, providing valuable information on:
- Heart rate and rhythm
- Atrial and ventricular activity
- Abnormal heartbeats or pauses
- Heart rate variability
The test is usually performed in a healthcare setting, and the data is analyzed by a cardiologist or healthcare professional to diagnose and manage heart conditions.
Note: Holter monitoring is also known as ambulatory electrocardiography (AECG) or 24-hour electrocardiography.
