Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery or cryoablation, is a medical treatment that uses extremely low temperatures to freeze and destroy abnormal or damaged cells. In dentistry, cryotherapy is used to:
- Relieve pain and inflammation
- Treat benign lesions (e.g., canker sores, papillomas)
- Remove decayed tooth tissue
- Treat gum disease (e.g., periodontitis)
- Whiten teeth (cryogenic teeth whitening)
The process involves applying a cryogenic agent (e.g., liquid nitrogen, carbon dioxide) to the affected area using a swab, spray, or probe. The extreme cold temperature causes cell death, inflammation reduction, and tissue contraction.
Benefits:
- Quick and relatively painless
- Minimally invasive
- Effective for localized areas
- Can be used in combination with other treatments
Note: Cryotherapy is not suitable for all conditions and should only be performed by a trained dental professional. Your dentist will assess your specific needs and determine if cryotherapy is the best option.
