Hematology/oncology is a medical specialty that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders related to blood and blood-forming tissues (hematology) and cancers (oncology).
Hematology deals with anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, bleeding disorders like hemophilia, and blood clotting. Hematologists diagnose these conditions through laboratory tests, such as blood counts, coagulation studies, and bone marrow biopsies, and they manage them through treatments like blood transfusions, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.
Oncology, on the other hand, deals with the prevention, diagnosis, staging, and treatment of various types of cancer. Oncologists diagnose cancer through imaging studies (like CT scans, MRI scans, and PET scans), biopsies, and other tests, and they treat it through modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and palliative care.
