Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with anatomy, physiology, and eye diseases. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment of eye disorders and diseases. They care for many eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and refractive errors such as nearsightedness and farsightedness. To address certain eye conditions, ophthalmologists may also perform surgical procedures such as cataract surgery, LASIK, and retinal detachment repair.
