Ocular motility testing
Ocular motility testing
Ocular motility testing, also known as eye movement testing, is a diagnostic assessment used to evaluate the movement and alignment of the eyes. The test helps to:
- Assess the extraocular muscles ( muscles that control eye movement)
- Diagnose eye movement disorders, such as:
– Strabismus (crossed eyes)
– Esotropia (eyes turn inward)
– Exotropia (eyes turn outward)
– Hypotropia (eyes turn downward)
– Hypertropia (eyes turn upward) - Identify neurological conditions affecting eye movement, such as:
– Cranial nerve palsies (e.g., third nerve palsy)
– Brainstem disorders - Monitor progress and treatment effectiveness
The test involves:
- Cover testing: Assessing eye movement and alignment by covering and uncovering each eye
- Version testing: Evaluating eye movement in different directions (up, down, left, right)
- Duction testing: Assessing eye movement in a single direction (e.g., looking up)
- Saccade testing: Evaluating quick eye movements between two points
- Pursuit testing: Assessing smooth eye movements following a moving target
Ocular motility testing is typically performed by an eye care professional (optometrist or ophthalmologist) or a neurologist. Abnormal eye movements can indicate various conditions, and early detection is crucial for appropriate treatment.
Note: While ocular motility testing is not directly related to dentistry, it is an important diagnostic tool for eye and neurological health, and dentists often work closely with eye care professionals and neurologists to ensure overall patient well-being.
