Refraction testing
Refraction testing
Refraction testing, also known as vision testing or refraction assessment, is a diagnostic test used to determine an individual’s refractive error (glasses prescription). The test measures how well the eye focuses light and detects any errors, such as:
- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Astigmatism (irregular corneal shape)
- Presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision)
The test involves:
- Autorefraction: A machine shines light into the eye to estimate the prescription.
- Retinoscopy: A technician shines light into the eye to determine the prescription.
- Subjective refraction: The individual is asked to look through different lenses to determine the clearest vision.
Refraction testing is performed by an eye care professional (optometrist or ophthalmologist) and is a crucial part of a comprehensive eye exam, helping to:
- Determine the correct glasses or contact lens prescription
- Diagnose and monitor eye conditions
- Detect changes in vision over time
- Develop a treatment plan for eye conditions
Note: While refraction testing is not directly related to dentistry, it is an essential part of overall health assessments, and dentists often work closely with eye care professionals to ensure patients’ overall well-being.
